Three Cups of Tea author Greg Mortenson
To everyone who came to see and hear Greg Mortenson March 30, thank you! Greg's presentation was inspiring and invigorating. We are happy that so many people had the opportunity to hear his remarkable story, which is recounted in the bestsellling book Three Cups of Tea. Two-thirds of the event's proceeds are being donated to Greg's Central Asia Institute; one-third benefits the missions and ministries of this parish.

Three Cups of Tea relates Greg’s story of his grass-roots efforts to build schools in remote villages in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Driven by his belief that education is the route to peace and the way out of extreme poverty, Greg created the nonprofit Central Asia Institute, which has now built fifty-five schools. As Tom Brokaw has stated, this “dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it’s proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world.
Greg Mortenson’s story ties into our parish’s own efforts at global outreach. It also dovetails perfectly with the first two Millennium Development Goals, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger and to achieve universal primary education for children. The Episcopal Church at large has committed itself to eliminating extreme global poverty by working through the MDGs—which were established by world leaders in cooperation with the United Nations—and our parish leadership has begun to seek ways to align our programs, and develop others, to relate to the goals. In keeping with the spirit of community outreach, proceeds will be shared by the Central Asia Institute and by outreach ministries of St. Andrew's.

Mortenson also has a nonprofit organization aimed at children, Pennies for Peace (www.penniesforpeace.org), which “educates American children about the world beyond their experience and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time.”
