Meditations on the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Friday, March 21, Bob Franke, musicians from throughout New England (and beyond), and the St. Andrew's choir will perform Bob's "Good Friday cantata," Meditations on the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Performances will be at 7 and 8:30 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10.

This year's cast will be familiar to regular attenders of the cantata; we are pleased that Dave Mattacks will be able to rejoin us on percussion. Vocalists include Geoff Bartley, Howard Bursen, Martin Grosswendt, Ellen Groves, Kim Harris, Reggie Harris, Doug Johnson, Kate Katzberg, Sally Rogers, Kate Seeger, Kim Wallach, and Larry Young. Instrumentalists include Paul Combs, flute, saxophone; Bob Franke, acoustic guitars; Martin Grosswendt, electric guitar; Joshua Levin-Epstein, bass; Dave Mattacks, percussion; and Larry Young, violin.

Writing about the cantata for its 25th anniversary performance several years ago, Bob said, "Many friends from the music world as well as many fine singers from the parish have been with the production throughout its lifetime. You will find the names of various cast members and musicians over the years on some of the finest recordings and writing in the classical, pop, folk and jazz worlds. The cast has rotated some as I’ve tried various combinations of artists, trying each year to polish up my little offering at the foot of the Cross, but I treasure each of their performances. We’ve all been trying to get it right, some of us for all [the] years of the production’s lifetime. We’ve all been surprised and sometimes overwhelmed by grace with each attempt."

Bob continued, "Although the story we retell here is at the core of Christianity, it is not necessarily about being a Christian: it’s about being human in the presence of the Divine, and it’s about the presence of Redemption in the midst of the most horrific and tragic dimensions of the human condition . . . [The cantata is] "both music and prayer, both art and witness."

Interested in singing as part of the choir? Rehearsals begin Thursday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m.

We are seeking sponsors of the cantata to help defray expenses. Contact Janet Fitch Parker at 781-631-5335, or the church office, 781-631-4951.

Consider hosting a "Cantata" gathering! Invite friends and neighbors for a simple supper or glass of wine, then bring them to the Cantata.
