Building a New America is a senior high youth group that comprises high school students from three parishes: St. Andrew's; Iglesia de Gracia (Grace Church), Salem; and St. Stephen's, Lynn. It was inspired by a leadership team based at the three churches and also at RAW ART in Lynn, who recognized that there are few clear channels for youth leadership on the North Shore and fewer opportunities for action and reflection across these communities.
In the summer of 2007, BANA began with an invitation to the young people to gather and begin to think about racism, sexism, classism, and other "isms." In September BANA fellows were chosen and began meeting regularly, alternating at the three different churches.
BANA is planning a trip to Biloxi June 21 for a community service week.
The June 1 Arts Extravaganza was a great success, raising over $4000 for the upcoming trip to Biloxi. Jennie Anderson writes, "Not only did we raise funds for the trip . . . but we were able to provide hospitality to the BANA Mississippi members as well as folks from the parish and the broader community." With outstanding talent--singers, dancers, other musicians--and inspirational art, the entire event was a success and an inspiration not only to the teen BANA fellows but to the rest of the community.
