February 13: From Isaiah to Jesus to the Millennium Development Goals At the heart of the Hebrew scriptures is a conviction that God has a "preferential option" for the poor, a belief which turns upside down how the world thinks and lives -- then and now. Jesus began his ministry by declaring that such a vision -- articulated powerfully in the prophets -- was already being fulfilled in him. In this first session of the series, we will explore how Jesus' scandalous teaching has fared throughout history and how the Millennium Development Goals are a contemporary effort to translate the vision into practice in the midst of today's global crises. Arthur Walmsley is the retired bishop of the Diocese of Connecticut. Over a lifetime of ministry he has led the church in its ministry in and to cities, as the Episcopal Church's public affairs officer during the civil rights and Vietnam struggles, and as an advocate for peace, justice, and reconciliation. He is one of the founders of Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation. February 20: What One Person and a Group of People Can Do. We will explore the progress made on meeting the MDGs. We will place the MDGs within a global framework for development. We will analyze what one small group of people have done through Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation. We will bring the discussion home to each one of us and what we can do individually and as part of a church. John Hammock is past Executive Director of Oxfam America and ACCION Internatonal. He is the North American Director of the Oxford University Poverty and Human Development Initiative; Associate Professor of Public Policy at the Fletcher School at Tufts and President of the Board of Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation. February 27: Why Should Christians Care About the MDGs? Christians believe in a God who acts in history. In our time together this evening we'll see how the MDGs connect to our personal and congregational faith journeys. We'll explore the MDGs as an expression of hope in God's Kingdom, how God has prepared us to act for the MDGs and why some say MDG advocacy is a necessary expression of our relationship with God. Lallie Lloyd is an independent consultant on ecumenical solutions to global poverty. She is chair of the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Domestic Mission and Evangelism, and was a founding board member of Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation. March 5: St. Andrew's Global Mission In the early 1990s Charlotte Tannheimer traveled to El Salvador on behalf of our parish to initiate a partnership with a local parish. Thus began our relationship with the people of El Salvador and the parish of San Andres Apostol. Three delegations have made mission trips to El Salvador and a pastor of San Andres has visited with our parish. This past year's delegation met with Episcopal Bishop Martin Barahona to discuss the MDG work taken on by his diocese. Members of our El Salvador delegations and our Global Poverty group will reflect on this important mission work. March 12: St. Andrew's Local Mission For many years, St. Andrew's has been very actively involved in local mission work. We have worked in support of bringing companionship, food and housing to the homeless on the North Shore. The two main centers of this work have been the Salem Mission and My Brother's Table. We will end our series on mission work reflecting on local needs and the means through which we help realize the MDGs on a local level. Other adult education opportunities are listed in The Chimes and in the calendar of upcoming events. 135 Lafayette Street / Marblehead, Massachusetts 01945 781-631-4951 / Fax: 781-639-7937 / officestandrews@verizon.net Comments or suggestions: webmaster@standrewsmhd.org. |
